Bio
Hazzan Joanna Selznick Dulkin received her Masters of Sacred Music and Investiture from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2004. She is an honors graduate of Stanford University, where she studied English, sang a cappella, and led community High Holiday Services. Her background is in musical theatre and folk music, and she has performed throughout the US and the world. She has also been a songleader and music educator in the Jewish community for many years, at congregations, schools and summer camps in the SF Bay and New York Metro areas, and at camp Ramah Darom in Georgia. Hazzan Dulkin is also an award-winning composer and published writer.
Originally from Northern California, Hazzan Dulkin and her husband, Rabbi Ryan Dulkin, spent eight years in New York before coming to St. Louis. They have two young sons, Zac and Jesse.
Hazzan Dulkin joins us as our full-time Hazzan starting August 1. At her previous position at Beth El Synagogue in New York, she created innovative musical, spiritual, and educational programs for congregation services, school, camp, and youth groups. Hazzan Dulkin is an award-winning writer and composer. She recently had three of her compositions selected by Shalshelet, the foundation for new Jewish liturgical music, to be performed at their annual June festival. Most importantly, Hazzan Dulkin is a dynamic, accessible Shalach Tzibur who brings to her davening an energy and enthusiasm that is inspirational. Along with her cantorial leadership for weekly Shabbat services, Hazzan Dulkin will be coordinating Bar/Bat Mitzvah training, and be involved in Family Life Programming, the Early Childhood Center, and Educational Programs. One of her goals is to bring a consistency to educational programming from early childhood through adulthood. With Hazzan Dulkin’s arrival, Shaare Zedek will be on the cutting edge of Conservative Judaism.
